Chief Salmon Returns to the Okanagan … With a Little Help from his Friends!

Salmon is one of the Four Food Chiefs of Okanagan legend, but tragically disappeared from local waters after European settlers dammed the Okanagan River for irrigation and to generate power downstream in the United States. Salmon could no longer return to their spawning grounds, and the Syilx people were forced to trade for salmon from other First Nations.

Then the Okanagan Nation Alliance established a hatchery and restored salmon to the region. In this episode Tracey and special guest star, actor Nathaniel Arcand, take a tour of the hatchery and show us footage of the annual release of salmon fry into the river system.

Tracey and Nathaniel then head down to the spectacular Nk’mip Vineyards at Spirit Ridge Resort (the first aboriginal-owned winery in Canada!), where they and Chef Liam prepare a cured Salmon filet, a bannock and salmon pizza, and cook some salmon over an open fire in the traditional manner.
