Stemalt: Wild Foods Meets the Wild West at Chopaka Ranch

Most people got their notion of cowboys in the West from Hollywood movies, but in the picturesque Okanagan and Similkameen valleys many of the cowboys are First Nations people.

In this episode host Tracey Bonneau takes us on a cattle drive at the historic Terbasket Ranch, located halfway between Osoyoos and Keremeos on the scenic Chopaka Indian Reserve. The name ‘Chopaka’ is that of a legendary hunter of the Okanagan people who was turned to stone by Coyote, and transformed into the Chopaka Mountain.

Tracey and her guest Mariel Belanger, an artist and actor, try their hand at calf-roping and riding a practice ‘bull-riding barrel’ (nk’amtiws), under the tutelage of the Terbasket family.

Barrel riding works up a hunger, so Tracey and Mariel finish the day by setting up an outdoor grill on the Similkameen River.

Recipes include three types of steak – sirloin, flank, and a beef tenderloin on a Himalayan salt block – along with Tracey’s quinoa salad recipe.
