Chief Black Bear

Chief Black Bear

Skəmxist – Chief Black Bear

Chief Black Bear is known as the “Chief for all creatures on the land.” In terms of nutrition, skemxist represents every animal in the Okanagan region, from birds to deer, giant bears to tiny rodents.

Chief Black Bear also represents ‘Governance’ and the societal and political values of the Okanagan People, in which self-sacrifice, leadership and giving are a key part of healthy living. Black Bear’s willingness to sacrifice himself led the other chiefs to do the same, providing a lesson to the Okanagan people that all are dependent on each other’s willingness to sacrifice for the good of others.

Black Bear is the role model for Okanagan Chiefs and Councils, for Black Bear demonstrates that leaders should be the first to sacrifice for the good of the community.
